Description

A study of the basic mechanisms of wear and their relationships to the mechanical properties of the materials in contact. Theoretical models of wear and lubrication processes will be presented, and the uses and pitfalls of the models will be discussed. Different types of simulation and screening devices will be presented, and the appropriate uses for each type, as well as the problems which may be encountered from misuse illustrated. Examples of the use of these models and methods to wear problems of particular interest to the students will be included. Prerequisite: BMS 701
