Overview
Description
The subinternship in Medical Psychiatry is a one-month fourth year medical student elective course during which the student functions as an intern on the Medical Psychiatry Unit. During the elective, under faculty supervision, the student will assume the role of the primary caregiver for up to four medical-psychiatry inpatients at a time. The student responsibilities will include performing the admission evaluation, constructing a psychodynamic formulation of the patient, suggesting diagnostic and treatment plans, presenting patients on rounds, interpreting and presenting radiographic and electroencephalographis tests, co-leading an inpatient therapy group, and when possible performing standard procedures such as venipunctures, IV placements, and lumbar punctures for his/her patients.
